Boulder City is located approximately 27 miles southeast of Las Vegas, just outside of the Las Vegas Valley. It is one of only two communities that prohibit gambling in Nevada and was originally meant to be semi-permanent. The Bureau of Reclamation started building homes there in 1931 for workers who were constructing the Hoover Dam. It now remains as a historic glimpse into Nevada’s past.
Boulder City is located in the Mojave Desert, therefore it has a desert climate. It has mild winters and hot summers. On rare occasion there is snow fall in the winter and every summer monsoons bring heavy rain. The hottest month is traditionally in July and the coldest month is typically December. There are around 300 days of sunshine here as well.
Unlike neighboring cities, Boulder City maintains strict growth controls. They limit permits for new construction to 120 single- or multi-family building permits, per year. Hotels are also restricted to no more than 35 rooms. These restrictions keep it a fairly small town. Surprisingly though, it is the largest city in Nevada when considering the land area.
From the River Mountain Loops trail, Historic Boulder City/Hover Dam Hotel and Museum, and the Big Horn Sheep at Hemenway Valley Park, there is not a shortage of things to do in Boulder City. This area is frequented by tourists and residents alike and is at the entrance to America’s FIRST National Recreation Area, Lake Mead National Park.
